Obscura Catalog — agreement version 1.2, October 2026.
This English translation is provided for convenience. The French version of this agreement prevails.
This agreement is made between Oorun (“the Publisher”) and any individual or legal entity that installs or uses the Obscura Catalog software (“the User”). Installing, copying or using the software constitutes unreserved acceptance of this agreement. If you do not accept its terms, do not install or use the software.
The Software is intended exclusively for professionals, for the needs of their business: photographic artists, rights holders and estates managing a body of work, galleries, foundations, experts, museums, institutions, companies, associations and self-employed workers. It is not offered to consumers within the meaning of the preliminary article of the French Consumer Code.
1. Purpose
This agreement sets out the conditions under which the Publisher grants the User a right to use Obscura Catalog, a macOS application to organize, describe and find images and to keep the catalogue raisonné of a photographic body of work (library of referenced images, EXIF and XMP metadata, works, agents, attributions, prints, exhibitions, publications and provenance, LIDO, CIDOC-CRM and CSV exports, reports, certificates of authenticity), together with its documentation and updates (together, “the Software”).
2. Ownership
The Software is protected by the French Intellectual Property Code and by international treaties. It is licensed, not sold. The Publisher retains all intellectual property rights in the Software, including its code, interface, documentation, name and logo. Nothing in this agreement transfers ownership of the Software to the User.
3. License grant
The Publisher grants the User a personal, non-exclusive, non-assignable and non-transferable license to install and use the Software on the Mac computers the User owns or controls, for the User’s own needs or those of the User’s organization. The Software is obtained from the Publisher’s member area, with an Obscura account and an Obscura Catalog license, including the free plan.
Without a license, the Software lets the User browse, search and describe the catalogue, up to 50 works and one workspace, import files and a CSV inventory, export to CSV, issue up to 10 certificates of authenticity and verify certificates. LIDO and CIDOC-CRM exports, importing a Lightroom catalog, issuing more than 10 certificates and a catalogue of more than 50 works require an Obscura Catalog license, attached to the User’s account and verified with the Publisher’s license server. A license for another software of the Publisher does not apply to Obscura Catalog. The number of devices, the limits, the term and the price of the license are those set out in the terms of acquisition; failing that, the license is granted for an indefinite term, within the limits of this agreement.
The license is verified offline. If it could not be confirmed with the license server within the period the server sets (30 days by default), the licensed features wait until the Mac connects to the Internet once; the other features remain available.
4. Restrictions
Except to the extent expressly permitted by law, in particular article L. 122-6-1 of the French Intellectual Property Code, the User shall not:
- copy the Software, except for one backup copy;
- modify, adapt or translate the Software, or create derivative works;
- decompile, disassemble or attempt to derive the source code of the Software;
- rent, lend, resell, sublicense or distribute the Software to third parties;
- remove or alter the proprietary notices, the signature or the notarization of the Software;
- circumvent the technical protection measures of the Software, including the license check.
5. User data
The images, the library, the catalogue, the XMP sidecars, the exports, the reports and the certificates created with the Software belong to the User. The Software stores them only on the User’s Mac and at the locations the User chooses, in documented formats (SQLite database, XMP, LIDO, CIDOC-CRM, CSV, PDF/A certificates and reports), so that the User can always retrieve them, including after this agreement ends. Browsing, searching and describing the catalogue, exporting to CSV and verifying certificates do not depend on an active license: the catalogue is never locked.
The Software neither copies nor moves the files the User imports: it references them where they are, reads them to compute their fingerprint and extract their metadata, and writes the metadata the User saves to an XMP sidecar next to the file. It only writes into the file itself at the User’s express choice, confirmed each time.
6. Personal data
The Software contains no analytics and no automatic crash reporting. Image analysis (objects, text, faces, similarity) runs on the User’s Mac. The Software’s network connections are described in the privacy policy, published at https://catalog.obscuraflow.app/en/privacy: the Publisher’s license server, the update check, and the timestamp authority the User configures. The catalogue may contain personal data (agents, provenance, people and faces): the User, or the organization on whose behalf the User acts, is their controller within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR).
7. Backups and certificates
The Software references the User’s images; it does not archive them or make backup copies of them. The User is responsible for backing up the images and the library folder, and for keeping the encrypted backup of the signing key and its passphrase in a safe place. A signing key lost without a backup cannot be restored, neither by the User nor by the Publisher.
Certificates of authenticity are issued by the User, under the User’s responsibility, in the name of the issuer the User designates and from the information the User enters. The Publisher provides the means to sign and verify them; it does not attest the authenticity of the works and is not a party to the certificates.
8. Updates and support
The Publisher may release corrective or new-feature updates, governed by this agreement unless stated otherwise. The Software offers them itself; they are only installed with the User’s consent. Any support is defined by the terms of acquisition; requests go through the contact form at https://catalog.obscuraflow.app/en/contact.
9. Warranty
The Publisher warrants that the Software performs substantially in accordance with its documentation. It does not warrant that the Software will be error-free or will meet the User’s particular requirements.
10. Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Publisher shall not be liable for indirect damages, such as loss of data, revenue or business, arising from the use of or inability to use the Software. The Publisher’s total liability is limited to the amount paid for the license during the previous twelve months.
These limitations do not apply in case of gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or to personal injury.
11. Third-party components
The Software uses third-party components, governed by their own licenses and listed in the “Composants tiers.md” file of the disk image and on the Third-party components page.
12. Term and termination
This agreement takes effect on the first installation of the Software. If the User breaches its obligations, the Publisher may terminate it automatically fifteen days after a formal notice that remains unanswered. On termination, the User stops using the Software and deletes it; the User keeps its data (section 5).
13. Trademarks
Obscura Catalog, Obscura Flow, Obscura Vault and the Obscura Catalog logo are names and distinctive signs of Oorun. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc. Adobe, Lightroom and Bridge are trademarks of Adobe; Capture One is a trademark of its owner. Other names mentioned belong to their respective owners.
14. Governing law and disputes
This agreement is governed by French law. The French version prevails over any translation. In case of dispute, the parties first seek an amicable solution. Failing agreement, the courts with jurisdiction over the Publisher’s registered office have exclusive jurisdiction.
15. Contact
