EXIF
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the format of the technical metadata recorded by cameras: capture date, camera, settings.
EXIF and XMP metadata
An image carries its own metadata, in the EXIF and XMP formats. Obscura Catalog builds on it and lets you enrich it.
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the format of the technical metadata recorded by cameras: capture date, camera, settings.
XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform, ISO 16684-1) is an extensible metadata format used by imaging software for descriptions, keywords, or rights.
On import, Obscura Catalog reads the technical data (dimensions, orientation, colour profile, camera, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, capture date, GPS) and the descriptive fields, in IPTC as in XMP: title, description, creator, rights, keywords, hierarchical keywords, rating, colour label, creation date, coordinates. The other EXIF, TIFF, IPTC, GPS and XMP properties stay visible in the inspector.
The editor changes the title, description, creator, rights, keywords, rating, capture date, latitude and longitude, with IPTC's limits checked as you type.
By default, changes go to the catalogue and to an XMP sidecar next to the file, which Bridge, Lightroom and Capture One read back; the file itself is rewritten only on explicit request (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, HEIC), without re-encoding its pixels, never for a RAW. Everything goes through ImageIO, with no external program.
